Minority Identity free essay sample
A factor that is intensely engaged with forming attributed character is generalizing. Generalizing is characterized as dole out a lot of specific credits to an individual dependent on assumed enrollment of a specific gathering. Generalizations as a rule includes improving an unpredictable circumstance yet have end up being compelling in forming what individuals in a specific gathering consider themselves. For instance, in ââ¬Å"Can We All Get Along? â⬠a study of dark individuals demonstrated that 66% of the gathering studied accepted that they imparted a typical political destiny to different blacks in the United States. This shows the union that happens inside gatherings of individuals dependent on something as basic as skin shading. I utilize the term dark in light of the fact that the book expresses that it portrays a personality and status dependent on shading. Be that as it may, this gathering attachment has demonstrated by political research to reinforce a people enthusiasm for political cooperation. The more that an individual relates to individuals in their gathering, the almost certain they are to look into applicants and approaches that further the progression of their gathering. We will compose a custom paper test on Minority Identity or on the other hand any comparable subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page Minority status isn't simply founded on a numerical size of what number of individuals, regardless of whether it be whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians and so on re represented, yet is arranged more by the advantages and benefits offered to various gatherings. Generally, minority bunches have been abused by greater part bunches for financial addition. For instance, the subjugation of African-Americans and the taking of land from American Indians and Mexicans when settlement was first happening. Different elements that can shape minority status can be race, sex, financial status, ethnicity or sexual direction. In American legislative issues, minority status can extraordinarily influence how gathering is spoken to in the political field. The job that these minority bunches play has been affected by the size and financial prosperity and geographic centralization of the gatherings populace just as on the off chance that they have recently taken an interest in a social equality development. These elements are alluded to as ââ¬Å"minority bunch governmental issues. â⬠The measure of individuals in these gatherings and where they are found assume an essential job in choosing what number of individuals each state will have in the U. S. Place of Representatives , the way that discretionary areas will be drawn up, and the quantity of votes that each state will have in the constituent school while picking the president. As expressed in ââ¬Å"Can We All Get Along? â⬠the Latino populace has been expanding quickly in the course of recent years and is poised to turn into the larger part, similar to number of individuals, by 2042 yet their political nearness is still no place near that of whites. The two fundamental explanations behind this is on the grounds that the Latino populace has countless voters who cannot cast a ballot in view old enough and on the grounds that they arent residents. Another issue in the absence of political support that is tended to in the readings is the financial status of the minority gatherings. Gatherings that are in an ideal situation monetarily, for instance the whites, can bear the cost of an opportunity to get educated on policy centered issues and get out and vote as needs be. Another factor that impedes a minority bunches political force is their degree of training and work. Whites are managed more open doors in the field of training since they can stand to live in better networks that have better schools and a progressively extreme educational plan. This implies they approach more data in regards to legislative issues which makes them progressively worried about democratic and encouraging their success. The impact of minority status has a lot to do with the political portrayal of minority gatherings. The investment in social liberties developments, similar to the significant one during the 1950s and 1960s led by the blacks, is a path for a minority, or ââ¬Å"dominated,â⬠gathering to engage themselves socially and strategically. Minority status is as yet pervasive in our current political framework and will keep on having a huge, generally negative, impact on the portrayal of these minority bunches until a change is made. I imagine that with opportunity will come a perceived leverage among gatherings and it will never again be a minority versus lion's share circumstance, yet a progressively level playing field that has an even say it what shapes our political lives. Race can be characterized as groupings among individuals that are comprehended as having a physical and genetic predisposition. Instances of these groupings are summing someone up as dark, white, yellow or earthy colored. That being stated, race is a social, not natural, development that makes it simpler for one gathering to accept ââ¬Å"dominationâ⬠over another. These gatherings can be grouped by physical contrasts which can cause social contrasts. There is an authentic inheritance of arrangements, laws and social shows that have looked to bar certain gatherings and advantage another. The dark versus white dynamic is likely the most perceived and most instilled social development in the United States. Starting with the British coming to North America and bringing their social perspectives on race as an approach to set up a self entitled predominance over different gatherings, America has utilized race to legitimize the abuse of specific gatherings. The interest for modest work encouraged this thought of white prevalence and got one of the principle explanations behind the oppression of blacks and the concealment of their race. Local Americans were viewed as a stage above blacks yet at the same time substandard compared to the whites so they had the alternative of adjusting to the English lifestyle or vanish totally. As clarified in ââ¬Å"Where White Privilege Came From,â⬠White slave proprietors utilized race as an approach to control dark slaves, saying that they were unequipped for learning or propelling their race. These slave proprietors really imagined that they were helping the blacks out by letting them partner with them and their advanced lifestyle. They looked the circumstance as though it was good cause work and that they were protecting the blacks from their normally mediocre and savage lifestyle. Gathering names, definitions, and limits are continually moving. Up until 1967 and the decision of Loving versus Virginia, there will even now 29 expresses that had laws disallowing interracial relationships among blacks and whites, just as whites and Indians, Asians, just as Mongolians. This was a law that was deserving of as long as fourteen years in jail. This absurd law is among the numerous that was brought about by socially developing a ââ¬Å"raceâ⬠so as to hold them down and advance the white motivation. What ââ¬Å"raceâ⬠you are considered in the United States has a huge effect on your social, financial, and political status. Returning to the production of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution it is evident that these records were composed to profit the white ââ¬Å"raceâ⬠and bar ââ¬Å"other persons,â⬠blacks and Indians, from getting a charge out of a similar life and freedom as that of the whites. The first constitution expressed ââ¬Å"Representatives and direct Taxes will be distributed among the few States which might be incorporated inside this Union, as indicated by their individual Numbers, which will be controlled by adding to the entire Number of free Persons, including those bound to support for a Term of Years, and barring Indians not burdened, three-fifths of every single other individual. â⬠This section just shows how discretionary governmental issues has been principally pointed towards headway of a select gathering while at the same time denying benefits and chances to other people. Much after the three-fifths bargain, there remained the issue of testimonial and citizenship. The measures for both of these was surrendered over to the states which permitted them to single out, in light of race, who might be viewed as a resident and who might be permitted to cast a ballot. History shows that because of social developments it has been anything but difficult to isolate various gatherings dependent on race. Regardless of whether it has been the refusal of casting a ballot or citizenship, or the appropriating of assets and benefits to the whites, social development is still alive in our current political state.

The Death Of John F. Kennedy - 1183 Words
On November 22, 1963, our president, John F. Kennedy, was shot and killed while riding through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was identified as the lone assassin hours after thousands of Texans witnessed the horrific last shot shattering their beloved presidentââ¬â¢s right temple. Six months later, a report of the investigation was released by the Warren Commission. Unreported findings caused the majority of America to question the accuracy of the results to what happened that day. A plethora of theories have been published since that day and continue to surface fifty-two years later. Some believe the mob or Cuba was behind the plot. Some believe Kennedy was killed to keep information from being exposed. Others believe it came to be a fatal error by an individual sworn in to protect John F. Kennedy at all costs. However, most side with what the facts support. This paper will investigate four theories that developed after the historical day Americans were brought to their knees. One notion is that the mob used Lee Harvey Oswald as a patsy to murder John F. Kennedy. John had taken favors from the mob to win the presidential election. In Patrick J. Why Do We Use Labels Or Classification Towards Everything...
Why do we as a society use labels or classification towards everything? We label humans, animal, our groceries, plants, etc. Many of us think are because it helps us organize the life we live but that hasnââ¬â¢t worked everyone. The labels we use have a negative impact to those who are one being labeled. Many of them try to live up to the labels or some labels degrade them. The labels with which we identify ourselves and others only keeps us divided and fighting each other instead of having us being unified. In our society today we discuss the immigration status. A candidate for the presidential seat Donald J. Trump has discussed his stance on Immigration. Mr. Trump during one of his campaign states, ââ¬Å"When Mexico send its people, theyââ¬â¢re not sending their best. They are sending people who have a lot of problems, they are bringing that problem to us, they are bringing drugs, crime and they are rapists.â⬠This prescription adds on to immigrants are lazy, they are h ere to take jobs, etc. Also, everyone thinks all the immigrant are Mexicans. This has impacted for everyone to see an immigrant as the person who stops this country to reach its potential. The characterizes of immigration discuss by Donald Trump are not true. Legalization of Marijuana Free Essays
string(144) " would be able to collect taxes on it, and would have a lot more money to pay for effective drug education programs and other important causes\." Legalization Of Marijuana By: Sam Montgomery Research Paper Emily Rodgers Legalization of Marijuana Why shouldnââ¬â¢t marijuana legalized? Are there actually good reasons for making it legal? Critics say marijuana is a gateway drug, but honestly, everything could be considered a gateway drug. People get high off of all kinds of things, and as soon as the high is over, they look for additional things that might give them the same effect. This includes common household products such as cough medicine, bleach, air dusters, and even permanent markers (Borba, 2012). We will write a custom essay sample on Legalization of Marijuana or any similar topic only for you Order Now Alcohol is legal and caused 24,518 deaths as recent as 2009; while in comparison marijuana is illegal and no one has died from overdosing on marijuana. A lot of people drink alcohol to get that ââ¬Å"buzzâ⬠or good feeling alcohol gives in drinking large amounts, especially when oneââ¬â¢s life might be full of problems. They think it will help them feel better, but this is only a temporary solution to their problems. There is really nothing good about drinking alcohol and it is legal, but then on the other hand, marijuana does have some good aspects and is illegal! This really doesnââ¬â¢t make much sense at all. Drinking alcohol is a choice made by us, and that is what marijuana should be. Similar to alcohol, the government needs to leave the responsibility for using marijuana to us. In this essay one will see that legalizing marijuana will optimize our liberty by limiting corruption, eliminate the cost to keep it illegal with the added bonus of monetary gains of making it legal, and will take out the failure to keep it illegal along with helping our country and government out for the better. The first and most basic reason that marijuana should be legal is that there is no good reason for it not to be legal. Some people ask ââ¬Å"Why should marijuana be legalized? â⬠when the question should be ââ¬Å"Why should marijuana be illegal? â⬠From a philosophical point of view, individuals deserve the right to make choices for themselves. The government only has a right to limit those choices if the individualââ¬â¢s actions endanger someone else. This does not apply to marijuana, since the individual who chooses to use marijuana does so according to his or her own free will. The government also may have a right to limit individual actions if the actions pose a significant threat to the individual, but this argument does not logically apply to marijuana because marijuana is far less dangerous than some drugs which are legal, such as alcohol and tobacco (Keeler, 2009). Legalizing marijuana would make free all those people in jail for possessing or smoking marijuana. Prison overcrowding is a serious, expensive, and persistent problem in our country. It makes the prison environment, violent and faceless to begin with, even more dangerous and dehumanizing. Governments at all levels keep building more prisons, but the number of prisoners keeps outpacing the capacity to hold them. Those in prison for marijuana law violations are the largest single category (ââ¬Å"Earth protector,â⬠). Marijuana-related police corruption takes one of two major forms. Police officers either offer marijuana dealers protection in their districts for a share of the profits (or demand a share under threat of exposure) or they seize the dealerââ¬â¢s merchandise for sell for themselves. There are known cases where police officers were indicted on charges of falsifying records of money and marijuana confiscated from dealers. Legalizing marijuana would eliminate this inducement to corruption, and help to clean up the policeââ¬â¢s image. Eliminating marijuana law violation and corruption cases would further reduce the strain on the courts, freeing judges, and investigators to handle other cases more thoroughly and expeditiously (ââ¬Å"Earth protector,â⬠). Legalizing marijuana would immediately relieve the pressure on the prison system, and optimize the peopleââ¬â¢s liberty by cutting out the corruption. Now, if you are diagnosed with cancer or something that causes so much pain itââ¬â¢s intolerable, would you want to be taking all kinds of pills that could hurt your body even further in the long run or smoke marijuana with really mild side effects? Researchers from Tel Aviv University say that smoking a little marijuana could help provide dramatic relief for the elderly who suffer from a variety of chronic ailments. The scientists tested the effects of marijuana treatment on 19 residents of the Hadarim nursing home in Israel. During the study, the participants reported dramatic physical results, including healthy weight gain and the reduction of pain and tremors. According to the study authors, the elderly participants also experienced an immediate improvement in their moods and communication skills after smoking cannabis. Zach Klein, a graduate of Tel Aviv Universityââ¬â¢s Department of Film and Television Studies, said that the use of prescription medications was also significantly reduced as a result of using medical marijuana (Rannals). The answer to the question is evident here, and that is why marijuana should have been legal for decades now. The second important reason that marijuana should be legal is that it would save our government more money than it would to keep it illegal. In the United States, all levels of government (federal, state, and local authorities) participate in the ââ¬Å"War on Drugs. â⬠The cost to interdict the marijuana traffic and the cost of incarcerating users and traffickers runs into billions of dollars. The crisis in inmate housing would disappear, saving taxpayers the expense of building more prisons in the future (ââ¬Å"Earth protector,â⬠). These people get locked up in prison, and the taxpayers have to foot the bill. We have to pay for food, housing, health care, attorney fees, court costs, and other expenses to lock these people up. This is extremely expensive! The savings would be redirected toward better police protection and speedier judicial service, or it could be converted into savings for taxpayers. For a change, itââ¬â¢s a happy problem to ponder, but it takes legalization to make it possible. In addition, if marijuana were made legal, the government would be able to collect taxes on it, and would have a lot more money to pay for effective drug education programs and other important causes. You read "Legalization of Marijuana" in category "Papers" Two states, Colorado and Washington, became the first to legalize marijuana, sparking celebrations, distinct, but not mutually exclusive from those rooting for Barack Obama. The states could see a major economic boost because of the legalization. The new measure is expected to bring the two states more than $550 million combined, with more than 300 economists previously estimating that legalizing pot could save the U. S. up to $14 billion a year (Bradford, 2012). The market for marijuana is already large and will almost certainly grow substantially. Large profits await savvy and successful growers, sellers, and entrepreneurs in associated enterprises such as fertilizer and grow-light vendors; pipe, bong, and vaporizer manufacturers and dealers; banks and other financial-service providers; not to mention munchie selling convenience stores and all-night diners (Worthington, 2012). In addition, a once-thriving hemp industry could again produce high-quality cloth, paper, nutritious oil, and biodiesel fuel. Obviously, all of these businesses will need employees, providing another boost to the economy. There is nothing but gains for legalizing marijuana; so, we should hop on the train sometime soon, and it will be beneficial. The third major reason that marijuana should be legal is because prohibition does not help the country in any way, it just causes many problems. There is no good evidence that prohibition decreases drug use, and there are several theories that suggest prohibition might actually increase drug use (the ââ¬Å"forbidden fruitâ⬠effect, and easier accessibility for youth). One unintended effect of marijuana prohibition is that marijuana is very popular in American high schools; because marijuana is available to everyone that has friends. You donââ¬â¢t have to be 21 to buy marijuana. Marijuana dealers usually donââ¬â¢t care how old you are as long as you have money. It is actually easier for many high school students to obtain marijuana than it is for them to obtain alcohol, because alcohol is legal and therefore regulated to keep it away from kids (Pope,2011). If our goal is to reduce drug consumption, then we should focus on open and honest programs to educate the youth, good regulations to keep drugs to protect underage persons, and continue to improve treatment programs for people with drug problems. The current prohibition scheme does not allow such reasonable approaches to marijuana; instead we are stuck with ââ¬ËDAREââ¬â¢ in which police officers are not telling the truth about drugs in schools, and policies that result in jail time rather than treatment for people with drug problems. The considerable police efforts now expended against marijuana activity; marijuana related crimes could be redirected toward protecting people from those who commit real crimes. The police could protect us more effectively by focusing resources on catching murderers, rapists, and the other perpetrators of crimes against people and property. Our country tried prohibition with alcohol, and that had failed miserably. We should be able to learn our lesson and stop repeating the same mistakes. If you are accused of a crime, it takes months to bring you to trial. Guilty or innocent, you must live with the anxiety of the impending trial until the trial finally begins. The process is even more sluggish for civil proceedings. There simply arenââ¬â¢t enough judges and staff to handle the skyrocketing caseload. Since it would cut crime and eliminate marijuana use as a type of crime, legalization would wipe thousands of cases off the court dockets across the country, permitting the rest of the court cases to move sooner and faster. Prosecutors would have more time to handle each case and judges would make more considered decisions. Improved efficiency at the lower levels would have a ripple effect on higher courts. Better decisions in the lower courts would yield fewer grounds for appeals, reducing the caseloads of appeals courts; and in any event, there would be fewer cases to review in the first place. Next discussion is about how traffickers are well prepared to defend their crops against intruding government forces. Legalizing marijuana would affect organized crime and subversion abroad as much as it would in the United States. A major source for guerrilla funding would disappear. So would the motive for kidnapping or assassinating officials and private individuals. Once again people could walk the streets and travel the roads without fear of marijuana-related violence. Countries would no longer be paralyzed by smugglers. The United States continued pressure on foreign governments to fight their domestic marijuana industries has clearly reinforced the image of America as an imperialist bully, indifferent to the concerns of other peoples. To marijuana farmers, the U. S. overnment is not a beacon of freedom, but a threat to their livelihoods (ââ¬Å"Earth protector,â⬠). Legalizing and regulating marijuana would remove some of the reasons to hate America, and deprive local politicians of the chance to exploit them. The U. S would have a new opportunity to repair its reputation in an atmosphere of mutual respect. In summary, all of these factors related to legalizing marijuana would help our government and our country in dealing with a very difficult problem for our society while providing many benefits during this time in history. In conclusion, the information provided proves how legalizing marijuana would solve many of our current problems associated with enforcing the marijuana laws. Legalizing marijuana will optimize our liberty by improving the justice system through removal of the numerous court cases involving marijuana and to allow the courts to better focus on the hard crimes, increase the efficiency of the prison system by providing much needed space for the real criminals in the overcrowded prison system, remove the difficult task of law enforcement agencies to enforce marijuana laws hile reducing the potential for corruption. Each of these changes would produce a major cost savings to the government while opening a brand new business market with taxable revenue which would create substantial monetary gains for the government and business. There would some costs involved in regulating this new business market, but the gains would clearly outweigh the costs. Legalizing marijuana would also eliminate one component of the drug market that is very difficult for the government to enforce the laws and has been an epic failure in the past. In addition, changing the United States stance on marijuana to match that of neighboring countries would most likely benefit foreign relations with those countries. Ultimately, legalizing marijuana would improve our government and our country. All of these pieces of evidence provide a strong argument for why marijuana should be legal. I donââ¬â¢t even smoke marijuana, and I still think our country is wrong for not having legalized marijuana by now, when you consider all of the facts. The United States needs to change its old-fashioned thinking and stop being close-minded about issues like this and start looking at solving these problems from outside the box. It is time for a real change, Obama, and one that actually will benefit all of us American citizens! Reference Page Adams, J. (2008, August 18). latimes. com. We will write a custom essay sample on Legalization of Marijuana or any similar topic only for you Order Now More than seventy million Americans have tried marijuana, and more than twenty million have smoked it in the last year, but does marijuana really affect people and their thinking process, and should pot be legal in the United States. I believe that marijuana should be legal because people should live life how they want, even though it could lead to harm. Marijuana hit the United States big in the 60ââ¬â¢s and 70ââ¬â¢s. (Wikman) Through this time period many people thought this drug was harmless. Today we know that pot is much more dangerous than previously believed. There are many slang terms used for marijuana, some are pot, weed, cannabis, Mary Jane, hash, dope, bud, green, smoke, to name a few. (Zimmer, Morgan) Pros and Cons to the Use of Marijuana There are many pros and cons to the use of marijuana. Many people use this drug for medical use, and others use it for entertainment. In the United States, using marijuana for medical purposes is illegal. Since the 1970ââ¬â¢s thirty-five state legislatures have passed laws supporting marijuanaââ¬â¢s use as a medicine. (ââ¬Å"Legalizing Marijuana-The Pros and Cons.â⬠) People suffering from nausea and vomiting, who are unable to swallow and hold down a pill, smoking marijuana is often the only reliable way to deliver THC. Another pro to the use of marijuana is diminishing glaucoma; it also can be affective in stimulating appetite in AIDS patients. There is also evidence that smoked marijuana and THC reduce muscle spasms from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. Physicians have reported that smoked marijuana provides relief from migraine headaches, depression, seizures, insomnia, and chronic pain. (ââ¬Å"Medical Marijuana Truth and Liesâ⬠) I think marijuana should be legal because if people sold pot in their stores, pot smokers would buy it, and it would boost the economy. I also think some drug crimes and innocent killings would go down an enormous amount. Effects of Marijuana on Health and Activity Even though I think pot should be legal, it does cause harm to your lungs. The effects of one marijuana joint on the lungs are equivalent to four tobacco cigarettes, placing the user at increased risk of bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchial asthma. A single joint contains the same amount of tar and other noxious substances as approximately fourteen to sixteen filtered cigarettes. Marijuana smokers typically inhale more deeply and retain smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers. As a result, marijuana smokers get more dangerous material in the lungs each time they smoke. Smoking pot is very harmful to your health, family, and friends. Some myths of marijuana and highway safety are marijuana-like alcohol- seriously impairs driving in some respects; pot is even more impairing than alcohol. (ââ¬Å"The Effects of Marijuana.â⬠)à I think this is true because marijuana does affect perception and driving ability. I believe that pot makes many people drive different, and it makes you a dangerous person at the wheel, while on this drug. Conclusion There are very little problems associated with the legalization and there is no mad scramble for the drug since it is legalized.à In conclusion, marijuana has very little harmful effects, and the effects it does have are very similar to tobacco and alcohol. à It also has medicinal uses where people can have significant benefits by using marijuana for their illnesses.à By prohibiting marijuana billions of dollars are being spent and peopleââ¬â¢s lives have been ruined. Legalization of Marijuana. In the year 1937, the United States government made the drug marijuana illegal.à This ban had little effect on people until the mid 60ââ¬â¢s and 70ââ¬â¢s.à This was a time where many mind altering drugs where experimented with and widely used.à During this time was also when marijuana research took place.à Early researches was vague and bias, but in the years after many legitimate studies have been conducted, and both sides of the issues have been revealed.à While looking at these studies with an open mind, one can conclude that marijuana should be legalized.à Even though there are some health risks associated with marijuana, it is no different than legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco. (Wikman) Ever since marijuana has become illegal, enforcing it has been an issue.à The federal government of America spends millions of dollars each year trying to keep it off the streets and into dealerââ¬â¢s hands, but their tactics barely do a thing.à The amount of money the federal Drug Enforcement Agency spends each year is $1.3 billion a year.à Overall, federal anti-marijuana efforts have cost taxpayers $30 billion (Zimmer, Morgan).à All of this money can be easily saved if the federal government can just legalize marijuana and regulate it.à Also, the government would be making money off taxes, as they do with alcohol and tobacco. Moreover, this would allow for farmers to grow marijuana and sell it to the government or individual buyers.à By allowing the cultivation of marijuana, farmers who grow tobacco would be helped because tobacco farmers these days are struggling because of the high taxes put on cigarettes.à The climate for growing tobacco is the same climate needed to grow marijuana, so this would help their incomes.à (ââ¬Å"Legalizing Marijuana-The Pros and Cons.â⬠) I think people that get caught with marijuana should not be punished as hard as they do. Marijuana arrest in the United States has doubled last 10 years. Tens of thousands of people are now in prison for marijuana offenses. An even greater number are punished with probation, fines, and civil sanctions, including having their property seized, their driverââ¬â¢s licenses revoked, and their employment terminated. Under federal law, possessing a single joint (or less) of marijuana is punishable by a fine from $1,000 to $10,000 and up to a year in prison . (Wikman) For people on probation or parole for any criminal offense, a marijuana arrest can result in their immediate incarceration. For people who live in public housing, the arrest of any family member for a drug offense can cause eviction of the entire family. Under state and federal law, mere investigation for a marijuana offense can result in the forfeiture of property, including cash, cars, boats, land, and houses. Despite these civil and criminal acts, pot continues to be readily available and widely used. (Wikman) Another reason legalizing marijuana would help the economy is the fact that there would no longer be dealers.à The use of dealers makes the price of marijuana much higher than it should be.à Mainly this is only due to the fact that marijuana is currently illegal, and dealers can set high prices.à By legalizing marijuana the price would drop to a more reasonable price, and the people who use to strain their money to buy the drug will no longer have to.à Legalizing marijuana would help the economy as a whole and for the individual. In 1996 voters in both California and Arizona approved ballot measures exempting physicians and patients from criminal prosecution when marijuana is prescribed for medicinal purposes in the relief of pain or other symptoms caused by cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, arthritis, and other illnesses and chronic conditions.à à Four other states passed similar ballot initiative that year, including Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Nevada, and legislatures in 37 states have passed bills in support of medical marijuana.à Medicinal purposes for marijuana give people who have tried all different types of drugs for their illnesses hope for relief. (Wikman) In order for marijuana to be legal, the government would have to regulate it as they do with alcohol and tobacco.à First the government should set an age limit on the purchasing of the drug.à This age should start off at eighteen, like tobacco, and if there seems to be a problem with the age then raising the age limit should be considered.à Overall, the government should first look at countries in the world where marijuana is currently legal.à In the Netherlands, the city of Amsterdam allows the usage of marijuana.à (Zimmer, Morgan)à The usage comes with many regulations though. à For example smoking marijuana can be only smoked in coffee shops administrated all over the city.à Also people can only buy a certain amount at one time, so the distribution of it illegally can be reduced. Marijuana is still the most commonly used drug in the United States and probably will be for years to come. Marijuana is on the rise and will increase in popularity throughout the United States. Iââ¬â¢m sure that our government will eventually legalize marijuana, but not soon. Many people argue the pros and cons of pot. I think our government should at least try to see what would happen to the economy if pot was legal, even though it is a huge risk to take. This problem is argued as much as should the alcohol age be lowered again, many teenagers argue this because if there old enough to go to fight in a war, then you should be able to drink. Many younger kids smoke pot without a care and they donââ¬â¢t realize the affects of the drug. America needs to start taking a larger action, and try to get the point across to the youth of America. This will always be a huge argument throughout the world. The question that everyone asks, should pot be legal in the United States. Bibliography: Zimmer, L., Morgan, J. Some states have recently approved marijuana for medicinal purposes. This in turn has reignited the debate on legalization. We will write a custom essay sample on Legalization of Marijuana or any similar topic only for you Order Now Both sides put forth arguments supporting their position. Following are some of the arguments for and against legalization of marijuana. Argument for Legalization of Marijuana Marijuana is not more harmful, dangerous or addictive than cigarettes or alcohol if used in moderation. In fact, marijuana has been shown to have medicinal benefits for patients suffering certain aliments (Cancer, Depressionâ⬠¦ ). Yet Marijuana is illegal while cigarettes and alcohol are not. Furthermore, Marijuana users are often treated more harshly than cigarette and alcohol users. * Keeping marijuana illegal will not stop people from using it, growers from growing it, and sellers from selling it. Prohibition does not work as we saw with alcohol in the 1920s and early 1930s. Prohibition has the opposite effect in that it tends to increase interest or graving rather than curbing production or use. Prohibition also creates a black market and the associated criminal elements. * Legalization would eliminate the criminal elements, lead to Government regulation of the drug (i. e. , purity, concentrationâ⬠¦ ), significantly increase government revenues through taxation, and put more money in our economy. Legalization would also result in significant savings in our Justice and Law Enforcement systems. Currently significant money and resources are spent on marijuana related arrest and processing. Both money and resources can be freed-up or redirected to more serious crimes or other beneficial programs. I believe that the arguments advanced above make for a strong position on legalizing marijuana. Furthermore, we should have the freedom to do with our bodies what we want so long as we do not hurt others as a result. How to cite Legalization of Marijuana, Essay examples

Science Versus Superstition in Dracula and Victoria England Essay Example
Science Versus Superstition in Dracula and Victoria England Paper During the Victorian Era in Britain, British citizens began to explore the east and became fascinated with it. There was a great interest in the orient and the objects and culture that came from it. Although the people were mystified by the superstitious nature of the orient learned from their eastern excursions, they were afraid of the east being able to travel to the west. Although the British consumed eastern culture, they were still afraid of too much infiltration by the east. They didnt want their pure British culture to be tainted. Because of this, they used science to explain, classify, and control the unknown superstitious nature of the orient. This push of science onto the eastern world is seen in several scenes throughout the novel Dracula, which was written by Bram Stoker during the Victorian Era in Britain. The proper British characters are constantly trying to overcome Dracula with science. British Imperialism and the British Empires attitude towards the east are shown through the relationship through science and superstition in Dracula. While traveling east, the British encountered a lot of new and previously unknown commodities, cultures, and people. These eastern cultures were seen as backwards to the British people. They had a sort of superstitious quality about them and were thought to be improper because of it. Britain didnt want their proper society contaminated by the superstitious cultures of the orient. There existed a fear that the east would begin to travel west and come back to Britain. The unknown societies and practices were so foreign to them. Britain feared the unknown and so took control by using science to try to understand and classify the cultures. It was believed that the Eastern notion of honor was skewed. It was driven by superstition, which resulted in easterners having flawed notions of what honorable behavior is1. This chaos and backwardness justified a need for a forced British order. Attempting to classify everything around them lead to the comfort that there was nothing they couldnt handle and that they had gained control over everything. There was nothing to be afraid of because the world was under proper Britain and their elitist science. This is similar to how proper Britain in the novel Dracula did not want to be tainted by the superstitious ways of Dracula from the east. From the very beginning of the novel, orientalism is prevalent in the comparisons made between the east and west. There is a sense of us versus them that Jonathan Harker has before he even arrives in Transylvania and meets Dracula. He speaks of leaving the west and entering the east. Steve Patterson describes how the British at the time represented progress, enlightenment, and modernity while the east represented chaos, superstition, and backwardness2. Jonathan is aware that the trains are getting later and later. He states, It seems to [him] that the further East you go the more unpunctual are the trains3. He associates lateness and chaos with the east, which was a common assumption at the time. The British thought the opposite of their proper order, was superstitious chaos. And since east is the opposite of west, the east must be chaotic and uncivilized. He goes on to describe the unfamiliar gar of the people he sees. He speaks of barbarian people wearing high boots and having heavy moustaches and long black hair. The mere comparison between himself and the Slavic people show Jonathans racist oriental views of the east. He is validating his clean cut British appearance by comparing it to barbaric people. Although the British were afraid of the orient and found the people to be backwards, they were also enthralled with it at the same time. When travelers came back form the east and came home to the west, they brought with them commodities and most importantly culture. British homes were filled with oriental rugs, vases, even hookahs. Teas, spices, and sugar became a part of everyday life. Even the most proper of gentlemen had their heirlooms and smoked their hookah pipes. Exotic animals were brought back along with exotic garb, plants, and customs. Oriental culture became intertwined with British culture. The two became inseparable. For a people who were so scared of letting eastern culture tarnish their proper ways, they sure welcomes the consumption of it with open arms. Although there was a large consumption of Eastern culture, the British still remained weary of their properness. They wanted their foreign treasures to be exotic, but still fit into the conservative structure of British society. There was a push and pull of oriental culture. The British were fascinated by the newness and wanted to immerse themselves, but still keep it distant enough to retain their Victorian pureness. In the same way that the British were interested in eastern culture, the characters in Dracula were unwillingly drawn to the mystery of the oriental Dracula. The power that Dracula had over the characters is reminiscent of the way that eastern culture had a powerful draw for the Victorian British. The characters are afraid of Dracula and his unknown superstitions, yet cannot shake their unexplained attraction to his eastern mysteriousness. When Jonathan is in the castle and encounters the three voluptuous women, he senses that they have an eastern animalistic evil about them, yet is drawn to them. He says there was something about them that made me uneasy, some longing and at the same time some deadly fear. 4 He is drawn to them even though he knows they are so completely opposite of proper Victorian Britain. There is an appeal to what is taboo in the strict Victorian society. Regardless that Dracula is Fiction, this speaks volumes about the Victorian British at the time and how they were so drawn to the superstitious culture of the east, even though they knew they should be upholding the conventional values that British society hold so highly. Just as the British in the Victorian era feared the east and tried to find comfort in science, the fictitious characters in Dracula attempted to defeat Eastern Dracula with science. Van Helsing explains that to save Lucy from Draculas induced illness he must perform several blood transfusions. He plans to use the blood from her initial three suitors to refill her body after Dracula has sucked most of it out. Van Helsing tries to use Victorian science and reason to overcome Draculas evil from the east. Even before Jonathan returns to England, he uses reason to overcome his fear in Draculas castle. While writing to Mina about he saw Dracula crawling down the side of the castle, he begins his entry by saying, Let me begin with facts-bare, meager facts, verified by books and figures, and of which there can be no doubt. While immersed in Draculas eastern castle surrounded by superstitions, the thing that comforts Jonathan and reminds him of his home in England, he uses the science and reason that England relies on so heavily to stay grounded while classifying the unknowns of the east. However, just as the British could not contain the superstitious east and stop it form penetrating their proper society, the characters in Dracula could not restrain Dracula with science alone. T he transfusions ultimately failed and Dracula continued to keep draining Lucy of her blood. When the transfusions fail and Van Helsing resorts to superstitious garlic. He is aware of the limitation of modern science6. The others in the group are confused by Van Helsings use of superstition. Dr. Seward exclaims to Van Helsing, Well Professor, I know you always have a reason for what you do, but this certainly puzzles me. 7 The others realize he is straying from science and moving on to superstition and are a bit uneasy about it, but they trust Van Helsing because they have faith in his scientific past. Just as the British peoples use of science and reason failed to keep the east out and they had to succumb to the permeation of eastern culture and accept it into their culture, the characters in Dracula have to accept the superstition into their lives and trust that it will be more beneficial than the previous use of science and reason. The oriental culture had made its way into British culture, seeped in, and shaken up proper Victorian society. Much like the failure to keep away Dracula, no matter how hard the British tried to keep oriental culture out, the ways of the east breached Englands shores. The order in British society was mimicked in the order of their science. Trying to solve eastern superstitions with science is similar to trying to impose order on the world to retain the comfortable, pure order of proper Britain. The characters in Stokers Dracula are constantly trying to control Dracula with science and constantly failing. They eventually have to resort to superstition. This mirrors the effect of eastern culture on British society. As much as Britain tried to contain the orient with science, the orient penetrated proper Britain and seeped into British culture, where it still remains today.

Nicola Tesla essays
Nicola Tesla essays Imagine electricity so powerful it can shoot through the air 130 feet, yet safe enough to travel through a person and light a bulb in his hand. Its not fiction with modern electronics. Most of todays modern electronic discoveries have their roots in the writings and patents of one genius who very few people know. Radios, blenders, fans, neon lighting, hair dryers, X-rays, fluorescent bulbs, speedometers, the automobile ignition system, and the basics behind cellular phones, radar, electron microscopes, and the microwave oven all seem to have listed inventors like Marconi, Roentgen, or Edison, but visions of all of these and many more inventions were in the mind of a man named Nicola Tesla long before any of them had otherwise been heard of. Tesla was man deemed as eccentric for the wild claims he made for his time, and public image marred by bad propaganda circulated by individuals who were to say the least jealous of his talents and as a result is not commonly known or accredited fo r his great accomplishments. His story begins in 1856 when he was born into a Serbian family in a mountainous area of the Balkan Peninsula. Teslas mother was a gifted inventor herself commonly devising new and easier ways of doing common household chores, while his father was a skillful writer and poet. In his youth he studied in Croatia where he learned of the great Niagara Falls, and imagined great things that could come of it. Tesla became very passionate about mathematics and science, and went on to study engineering at the renowned Austrian Polytechnic School at Graz. It was here that Tesla saw the problems with current electronics, specifically the Direct Current motor. Later while living in Budapest, Tesla devised his idea for the Alternating Current motor, an advance in technology that would change the world. Tesla was employed by companies throughout Europe to improve their DC generation facilities, but was interested in gaining...

Blah, Blah, Blah
Blah, Blah, Blah Blah, Blah, Blah Blah, Blah, Blah By Maeve Maddox Since ancient times, speakers of every language have made up nonsense syllables to indicate contempt for what other people were saying to them. Weââ¬â¢ve even inherited the ancient Greek nonsense syllables bar-bar-bar in the word barbarian: The Greek word barbaros meant ââ¬Å"foreign, strange, ignorant.â⬠According to the OnlineEtymology Dictionary, the word barbaros was an onomatopoeic formation echoing the unintelligible speech of a foreigner. The most common nonsense syllable used to represent empty talk in the United States is blah: The earliest OED documentation of blah in the sense of ââ¬Å"meaningless, insincere, or pretentious talk or writing; nonsense, bunkumâ⬠is 1918. Blah is usually repeated when the sense is ââ¬Å"empty talkâ⬠: When big data is just so much ââ¬Å"blah, blah, blahâ⬠Getting Past ââ¬Å"Blah, Blah, Blahâ⬠When Talking to Prospects Sometimes a single blah means the same thing: Ive been overwhelmed by the amount of jabber in the world ââ¬â its a vast cloud of blah. As a plural noun, ââ¬Å"the blahsâ⬠are a state of despondency: Youââ¬â¢ve got the blahs. à Youââ¬â¢re not feeling hopeless, but youââ¬â¢re not feeling good either. As an adjective, blah means ââ¬Å"lethargic, unenthusiastic, listless, or torpidâ⬠: What to Do When You Feel Blah About Your Job ââ¬Å"Blah, blah, blahâ⬠recently found its way into the news when a political candidate in Oregon blasted a newspaper reporter who demonstrated his lack of interest in what another candidate was saying by writing down ââ¬Å"blah, blah, blahâ⬠instead of her actual words. And perhaps the longest sequence to date of this string of nonsense syllables occurs in a television ad in which actor Gary Oldman holds a telephone to his ear and says ââ¬Å"blah blah blahâ⬠for five seconds straight. Another set of nonsense syllables is ââ¬Å"yada yada yada.â⬠Variations of this utterance are documented in the OED beginning in 1947. I first heard it on the Jerry Seinfeld show where I understood it to mean ââ¬Å"details too boring to mention.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Historical Research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Historical Research - Essay Example Historical research can offer the business or management researchers a variety of means to achieve extensive knowledge to understand, solve or interpret a situation at hand. Knowledge of the underlying information to any matter enhances the levels of understanding whilst improving the ability to discern and decide on the right or wrong decisions in business management. Historical background information adds to the chances of easier understanding why for instance the reasons implying the general trends in the present (Mehran, 2010). Historical research in the business context Historical research is not a major topic in business and management. Additionally this field lacks supply of enough attention as an independent c research field. Historical research in management studies takes care of various issues requiring this form of research methodology to assist in comparisons with other research methodologies (Sullivan, 2010). Historical research is used in decision making and in evaluati ngà intercultural negotiation in business. ... It involves; formulation of a research question as the starting point (Ribeiro, 2011). There is no reason why historical research will not incorporate some features quantitative research. Conversely, the main emphasis is mostly interpretivistic. The question on review has to be defensible. The relevance check- a historical researcher ought to note that for his work to uphold relevance, it is important to check if the work at hand is track. Note; I. Whether there is prior evidence holding essential concerns on how present decisions are to be made and the means through which future current policies are to be instituted. II. Whether there exist suggestions that the business had encountered a related issue in the past, how they were met, and the outcome of the decisions drawn at that time. III. Whether there is a possibility that the matter at hand may be as a result of a cycle. Is there enough understanding of the matter and the cycleââ¬â¢s nature and how it would be of importance in solving the present situation? Next is the need to determine the scope the business management issue extends. This cannot be easily perceived by a novice researcher as it calls for deep consideration of the domain for examination. The domain for examination establishes the principle discipline that the historical research will require to consider (Stefanie, 2007). A research project of this kind often applies marketing and financial knowledge and concepts. An aspect cannot be understood independently from other related aspects in business management. This indicates that the researcher ought to understand the history of the matters he or she is comparing. This type of idea also deeply applies to business management studies. With the shift in focus to customer retention and loyalty, companies now have to invest in better customer service to ensure customer satisfaction. Better service also includes better geographical advantage to serve where the customers are located. There is little bargaining power for buyers in the luxury car segment as there are numerous buyers scattered all around the globe. There is better transparency and huge amounts of information available to buyers regarding the pricing and cost of manufacture of cars and hence they have some leverage in negotiating the purchasing price. This advantage is mostly over-ridden by the fact that buyers for this segment are mostly individuals and are not grouped together for a collective advantage. Since luxury cars are sold typically by the company or direct dealers, there are few players in the distribution channel at present. Luxury cars have lower or no resale value as compared to economy cars. This is an enormous factor that influences buying decisions in the case of luxury cars. Bargaining power of suppliers The suppliers to large premium segment manufacturers would typically be large and medium manufacturers themselves. Since quality is the biggest product differentiator in this segment, it is imperative that companies choose their suppliers with care and efficiency. In such a case, it would be difficult to replace or change suppliers with ease. As a result they have some flex in determining product pricing, delivery and distribution. Threat of new entrants The threat of new entrants in this segment is very low due to the many entry barriers that exist in this industry. There are too many well established companies with stiff competition among them. A huge amount of capital is required to enter into this sector. There should also be tremendous amount of tacit and explicit knowledge of products and constant innovativeness to compete in this industry. The luxury car segment is driven by quality and goodwill as well and this comes with time and experience in the sector. With all the above barriers, few companies would look into entering this industry . However, there is the threat of companies already existing in the auto industry, entering into the luxury car segment. Many companies, which originally were small and economy car makers, have now entered into the luxury car segment and are giving the bigger and better established giants in this segment a run for their money. Threat of substitute products The most prominent substitute to cars is public transports such as buses, taxis and aircrafts. The bigger companies in the premium car segment have taken steps to compete with public transportation by manufacturing luxury buses and providing pick-up service in their premium cars as part of the hospitality sector. martin luther and Birth of Protestantism :: essays research papers
Thesis statement: Martin Luther was responsible for the break-up of the Catholic Church Martin Luther was a representative during the 16th century of a desire widespread of the renewal and reform of the Catholic Church. He launched the Protestant reform a continuation of the medieval religious search. From the Middle ages, the church faced many problems such as the Babylonian Captivity and the Great Schism that hurt the prestige of the church. Most of the clergy lived in great luxury while most people were poor and they set an immoral example. The clergy had low education and many of them didnââ¬â¢t attend their offices. Martin Luther had witnessed this himself, ââ¬Å"In 1510 he visited Rome and was shocked to find corruption on high ecclesiastical placesâ⬠During Lutherââ¬â¢s early life he faced a severe inner crisis. When he sinned he looked for comfort in confession and followed the penance, the fasting, prayer and observances that the church directed him. But, he found no peace of mind and worried about his salvation. But reading St. Paulââ¬â¢s letters he came to believe that salvation came though faith in Christ. Faith is a free gift, he discovered, it cannot be earned. His studies led him to a conclusion that, ââ¬Å"Christ was the only mediator between God and a man and that forgiveness of sin and salvation are given by godââ¬â¢s grace aloneâ⬠(Martin Luther, 01). Historians agree that, ââ¬Å"this approach to theology led to a clash between Luther and the Church officials, precipitating the dramatic events of Reformationâ⬠. To construct Saint Peters Basilica, Archbishop Albert borrowed money from the Fuggers (wealthy banking family). To pay for this loan Pope Leo X gave permission to Archbishop Albert to sell indulgences in Germany. An indulgence is a way to reconcile with God, by confessing your sins to a priest and perform a penance. By the later Middle Ages people believed that indulgence removed all their sins and ensured entry to heaven. The selling of indulgence troubled Luther, he thought people were ignorant to believe that they didnââ¬â¢t have to repent after they bought an indulgence. Martin Luther was a friar very devoted to the Church but after analyzing all these aspects he decided to do something about it. On October 31, 1517 he attached to the door of Wittenberg Castle a list of 95 theses or propositions on indulgences. These theses criticized papal policies and were objections about he church put on hold for discussion.

John Taylor Gatto Against School Essay
When it comes to the traditional education, John Taylor Gattoââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Against Schoolâ⬠questions whether we really need the nine month, drawn out, traditional curriculum. Gatto goes on to name several successful people through history that were not products of a contemporary school system. When I think of Gattoââ¬â¢s theory of forced schooling, a friend of mine named John Smith who goes by the alias of Viper comes to mind. Viper is in his late 20ââ¬â¢s, lives in South Philadelphia, and has worked as a Roofer for the past 10 years. Viper went to a public school in South Philadelphia. Viper went to a school where said, ââ¬Å"It wasnââ¬â¢t easy. I was scrawny and white and we were poorer than the jigs that went to school wit us, so we caught alota shit.â⬠Viperââ¬â¢s school was extremely underfunded. ââ¬Å"Some days there would be trash laid out by the trash cans cause nobody would change the trash bags, the food was shit, and the bathroomsâ⬠¦forget i t.â⬠He would walk twelve blocks back to his house just to go to the bathroom. There were no extracurricular activities like book clubs and band and the school was rundown and decrepit. Eventually he started to miss classes regularly. He felt that the teachers did not care. Classes were extremely boring to him. He was actually approached by his biology teacher and told he could cut class everyday as long as he turned in his work and he would receive a D at the end of the year. He was not amused by the offer, he was not even interested in graduating anymore. ââ¬Å"I expected to be a laborer for the rest of my life so I felt like education was unimportant.â⬠Viperââ¬â¢s education started taking a back seat to work around his sophomore year of high school. He was the middle child in a family of four, all of whom have dropped out of high school and are laborers today. ââ¬Å"My parents made me get a job when I was thirteen, thatââ¬â¢s the way it was with all my brothers,â⬠says Viper. Eventually he started to make a decent amount of money and admits to being extremely naà ¯ve, saying ââ¬Å"Why the fuck was I gonna go ta school for eight more years if I was makinââ¬â¢ 25-30 thousand dollars a year. Do the math, instead of spendin 100 thousand dollars in college and waste my time in school I coulda made 200 thousand dollars by the time I was 24.â⬠One day Viper decided to make an appointment with a school counselor. He was hardly going to class, working every day when he was supposed to be in school, and partying every night and having fun. School was more of a social event. He was just going to school to see his friends and make plans for the weekend. When he told the school counselor that he was planning on dropping out the counselor stood up, looked him in the eye, extended his hand and said, ââ¬Å"Good Luck!â⬠ââ¬Å"The guy didnââ¬â¢t even give a shit!â⬠Viper said. By the time December came around of his sophomore year, he was a high school dropout. He was working everyday by that time already so he was not stagnant. He was still living with his parents. The fact that he dropped out was ok with them because he could ââ¬Å"contribute to the house,â⬠as his father put it. Viper eventually saved enough money to get his own place and now lives with his wife of three years and their two children who are two and five years of age. He said, ââ¬Å"I always thought I learned more out of school than in high school, but itââ¬â¢s not what my kids are gonna doâ⬠. He aspires to open his own roofing company one day. Although I do not agree with the path that Viper chose in life, he is happy and successful today. He is a great father and happily married. He does not drink anymore and devotes every second of his free time to his family. In a way he is almost a survivor to me. He is not well spoken or the brightest guy in the world, but he would d o anything in his power to help any person in a bind.

Elizabeth Van Lew Southerner Who Spied for the Union
Known for: Pro-Union Southerner during the Civil War who spied for the UnionDates: October 17, 1818 - September 25, 1900 Slave power crushes freedom of speech and of opinion. Slave power degrades labor. Slave power is arrogant, is jealous and intrusive, is cruel, is despotic, not only over the slave but over the community, the state. -- Elizabeth Van Lew Elizabeth Van Lew was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. Her parents were both from the northern states: her father from New York and her mother from Philadelphia, where her father had been mayor. Her father became wealthy as a hardware merchant, and her family was among the wealthiest and most socially prominent there. Abolitionist Elizabeth Van Lew was educated in a Philadelphia Quaker school, where she became an abolitionist. When she returned to her familys home in Richmond, and after her fathers death,à she convinced her mother to free the familys slaves. Supporting the Union After Virginia seceded and the Civil War began, Elizabeth Van Lew openly supported the Union. She took items of clothing and food and medicine to prisoners at the Confederate Libby Prison and passed information to U.S. General Grant, spending much of her fortune to support her espionage. She may also have helped prisoners escape from Libby Prison. To cover her activities, she took on a persona of Crazy Bet, dressing oddly and acting strangely; she was never arrested for her spying. One of the Van Lew freed slaves, Mary Elizabeth Bowser, whose education in Philadelphia was financed by Van Lew, returned to Richmond.à Elizabeth Van Lew helped get her employment in the Confederate White House. As a maid, Bowser was ignored as she served meals and overheard conversations. She was also able to read documents she found, in a household where it was assumed that she would not be able to read. Bowser passed what she learned to fellow slaves, and with Van Lews aid, this valuable information eventually made its way to Union agents. When General Grant took charge of the Union armies, Van Lew and Grant, though Grants military intelligence head, General Sharpe, developed a system of couriers. When the Union troops took Richmond in April, 1865, Van Lew was noted as being the first to fly the Union flag, an action that was met with an angry mob.à General Grant visited Van Lew when he arrived in Richmond. After the War She had spent most of her money in her pro-Union activities.à After the war, Grant appointed Elizabeth Van Lew as postmistress of Richmond, a position that allowed her to live in some comfort amid the poverty of the war-torn city. She was largely shunned by her neighbors, including anger from many when she refused to close the post office to recognize Memorial Day. She was reappointed in 1873, again by Grant, but lost the job in President Hayess administration. She was disappointed when she also failed to be reappointed by President Garfield, even with support for her plea by Grant.à She retired quietly in Richmond.à The family of a Union soldier she had helped when he was a prisoner, Colonel Paul Revere, raised money to provide her with an annuity which allowed her to live in near poverty but stay in the family mansion. Van Lews niece lived with her as a companion until the nieces death in 1889. Van Lew refused at one point to pay her tax assessment, as a statement for womens rights since she was not permitted the vote. Elizabeth Van Lew died in poverty in 1900, mourned mainly by the families of the slaves she had caused to be freed.à Buried in Richmond, friends from Massachusetts raised the money for a monument at her grave with this epitaph: She risked everything that is dear to man -- friends, fortune, comfort, health, life itself, all for the one absorbing desire of her heart, that slavery be abolished and the Union be preserved. Connections The black businesswoman, Maggie Lena Walker, was the daughter of Elizabeth Draper who had been an enslavedà servant in Elizabeth Van Lews home.
